Street Photography: w.58th and Central Park

So about a week ago I was on a mission for the delicious french cookie known as "the Macaroon." Staying in a hotel for a few days i decided to switch things up a little. So to test myself I grabbed a 100% manual film camera and stepped out to begin my journey.

Being at the ripe old age of 22 the most I have the privilege of shooting film was during an independent study I enrolled in during my senior year of high school as well as my first semester of college.

I have however recently been shooting some of my fashion work with film, where i had the convenience of a light meeter by my side. On this particular adventure however i was only armed with my camera (again fully manual) and 1 roll of Portra 400 color film so I basically just went off of instinct on a partly cloudy day in NYC.

So below are some of my favorite images from that walk from w.58th street, through Central Park, up to 74th street. and sadly the macaroons are gone now.....

Keep in mind i was working with 400 speed film in multiple situations where the light was constantly changing. Also i had NO light meter with me.

The images below are straight out of camera, i decided to keep this one completely raw with absolutely no post production.

enjoy :)

Modern Model Magazine. September 2013

I apologize in advanced for taking a few days before posting this, and that the following post is most likely going to sound like I won some sort of major award, however on September 30th my first ever publication was released!!!

A 4 page feature including my work as well as some "words of wisdom" (as someone told me today) printed in the September issue of international online magazine Modern Model.

I emailed the magazine in regards for information on being a contributor, about 3-4 days later I received a replay stating that they would like to feature me! I was stunned and equally as excited, but it wasnt until I first laid eyes on the feature that it really hit me that "this is real!" "this is my work in an actual fashion magazine!"

The feeling of seeing my own work published and getting positive feed back was surreal and I couldn't have done it with out the help of everyone involved!

A lot of credit goes to models, Arrey Lee, Jessica Suvak, Alyssa Joynson, and Shannon Lawlor.
As well as Arrey's incredibly talented makeup skills
Andrea Howell's ridiculously talented ability to design and create some of the most amazing outfits and wardrobe. (worn by Arrey Lee.)

I feel so blessed to be heading in the direction i am with my fashion work, and i remain just as passionate about my craft as a fashion photographer as i ever have. As i state in my Bio on my website "fashion photography is the meaning of my life." it is what truly makes me happy!

With all that being said i am pleased to announce my publication, and I am confident there will be many more to come!

Also i owe a lot to fellow photographer, friend, and who i consider a mentor, Julie Stanley for constantly showing her support in my work. I fear i would not have come this far with my work at such an early age without her support.

I am aware that this whole post probably sounds like i won some sort of major award from my first real publication, but that is just because i am that excited about it! :)

Below are screen shots of each page I am featured, as well as a link to the actual online version of the whole september issue.

The Age of Steam.

So this weekend i was informed by my brother that the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad in north east Ohio was showcasing the 765 Steam Locomotive. With a weekend free and no shoots currently planned, i took a very very short break from fashion work and headed out to photograph the train.

Taking an unconventional approach at a documentary style i followed the train to two different stops and was reminded of how amazing the progression on time has been. I often find myself daydreaming of fashion concepts of 1920's 1930's style fashion shoots. I was reminded that there was a point in human history where travel by steam locomotives was the main source of long distance travel. It amazes me how far time has brought us, and hopefully how far we will go.

However for now lets take a look back to what i have most recently referred to as "The Age of Steam" as the smell of burning coal fills the air and the loud roar of the whistle echoes through the valley as the conductor shouts "ALL ABOARD!"

All this aside, keep yourself updated and be ready for my first official publication, and may i say what an honor it is and an excitement to have my first publication in an actual Fashion Magazine!!!
*Spoilers* ;)

BUT FOR UNTIL THAN!!

I now present to you my very unconventional and very short step away from Fashion Photo, and i bring you
"The Age of Steal" Photographed by me Patrick Hovan.

Summertime Sadness.

So while i walked outside a few days ago i was hit with the familiar feeling of the season at its end. Fall which undoubtedly may be my favorite season is on its way.

Although the Fall is my favorite time of the year i still feel that i am not over summer yet. This summer has been incredibly busy and for the most part exciting.

As the season begins to make it's early transitions into the next and while out walking with a friend of mine i was hit with an idea of making a collaboration of the sadness that may come to some regarding the end of summer, yet taking the excitement of high fashion and a new season of endless possibility into consideration. also heavily influenced by the son "summertime sadness" by Miss Lana Del Rey ;) haha

Anyway here is a small series of photographs showcasing the end of summer and the sadness it may bring, incorporated with the motion of seasons change and excitement of new adventure and fashion.

It's been a while since my last blog post so i hope you enjoy the photos!

and remember to check out my website for more of my work!

A Day with Sun_Shinehead

Yesterday i was called and informed the job i was on at the studio was moved to another date, so i now had the entire day free. With no particular concept in mind i called my good friend Alyssa to go on a shooting adventure.

Let me just say that i love working with this girl, she is a great friend and not only a beautiful model, but she is also an extremely talented artist in multiple aspects. I am happy to call her my friend and always excited to shoot with her even with no concept of a shoot in mind.

follow her Instagram @sun_shinehead

So we set out to a few locations around "the country side" if you will.... which is not really my favorite place to go for a few reasons (I'm a city person) although this spot is nice in the fall.

anyway here are two photos i am particularly happy with, i will most likely be uploading more later on as i also shot a lot of film as well and will be processing soon

Also don't forget to check out my new website, and keep updated for new content!

IT'S FINALLY HERE!!!

So after almost two months of constituently working on building my website, only to look at it the next morning, completely strip it down and re build, www.patrickhovanphoto.com is finally here!!!!!!

At long last i am at a point where i am happy with the way my website looks so NOW ladies and gentleman my website, showcasing my work in fashion, editorial, runway, conceptual portraiture among much more is finally out and ready to be viewed by all!!!

For a while now i felt link my photography work was taking me nowhere.... and to be honest i began to feel quite discouraged as if i was pursuing my passion at a slow and uneasy pace. By all means i NEVER lost interest or gave up hope for one second, i continued to wake up and drown myself in my work and the photography/fashion world.

Now that my website is finally published and out for the world to see, and i have business cards and look books on the way, i am back and feeling 100% better than ever about my work and how i have progressed and will continue to progress.

That passionate flame burns forever brighter for my world of photography and fashion and i will never give up on making my dream a reality!

Now if you are still with me here, i present to you, Patrick Hovan Photography at

Enjoy my fellow creatives, and please leave me any feed back you have, i am always open to opinions!

-Patrick.
